I look at autonomous vehicles through insurance, because that is my field, and from there the biggest change is who carries the risk.

The role of the driver shifts from operator to supervisor. For a long stretch of the transition, the car does most of the driving and the human is there to take over, which is a genuinely different and in some ways harder job than driving, because staying alert while doing nothing is unnatural. The one specific change I would point to is liability. Today the driver is presumed at fault and buys insurance against their own mistakes. As the system does the driving, fault moves toward the manufacturer and the software, and personal auto insurance starts to look more like product liability on the machine.

That reshapes the whole product I work in. Insurance is priced on the risk a specific driver represents. When the driver is supervising rather than steering, the thing being insured is the fleet’s technology, not the individual’s habits, and pricing has to follow the risk to wherever it actually sits.

So the driving experience changes less at the wheel and more in the fine print. The felt difference is going from someone responsible for every second on the road to someone accountable mostly for the moments they were asked to pay attention and did not.

Instead of constantly steering, braking, and scanning every second, the person in the driver’s seat will spend more time monitoring what the vehicle is doing and being ready to step in when road conditions, weather, construction, or unclear lane markings confuse the system.

From a consumer vehicle education perspective, that shift matters because supervision sounds easier than driving, but in practice it can be harder to stay engaged when the car handles most routine tasks well. A human driver is usually sharpest when fully involved. If the car is doing 95% of the work on a highway, people may start checking a screen, thinking about work, or simply mentally drifting. Then, if the vehicle suddenly asks for human intervention, the challenge is no longer basic driving. It is regaining situational awareness fast enough to make a safe decision.

I think that will reshape how people evaluate vehicles too. Buyers will not just ask, “How does it drive?” They will ask, “How clearly does it communicate what it sees, what it plans to do, and when it needs me?” In other words, interface trust will become part of the ownership experience. The quality of alerts, camera visibility, sensor reliability, and event logging may matter more to consumers than some traditional performance features.

A specific way the experience changes is that drivers become managers of risk rather than continuous operators of the machine. The road trip of the future may feel less physically tiring, but more dependent on understanding the limits of the technology.
