Dubai is currently testing an autonomous electric transit system called Glydways as part of a four-week trial. The system utilizes dedicated tracks, separating the vehicles from general traffic. This initiative by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) aims to evaluate the technical performance, safety, and reliability of the autonomous vehicles, as well as their potential integration with Dubai’s existing public transport network.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s director general and chairman of its board of executive directors, participated in a five-minute ride on the designated Bluewaters route to mark the commencement of the trial operations. The testing program will thoroughly examine the readiness of the autonomous driving technology, sensing capabilities, communication systems, and control mechanisms. It will also focus on user experience, journey times, ease of use, and the management of vehicle movements, with the generated data intended to inform future expansion possibilities.

System Capabilities and Partnerships

The Glydways trial is being conducted in partnership with Dubai Holding, which is providing the testing environment, infrastructure, and operational support. This collaboration builds upon a previous agreement between RTA and Glydways to establish an automated transit network. The system is designed to enhance public transportation and improve connectivity between stations and passengers’ origins or final destinations.

Each Glydways vehicle can accommodate four to six passengers and operates at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The vehicles have a range of up to 250 km on a single battery charge. They are equipped with 20 high-resolution LiDAR sensors, radar, and high-definition cameras, which work in conjunction with artificial intelligence and autonomous driving systems to monitor their surroundings and manage navigation. The system is engineered for on-demand travel, available 24/7, directly between specified points.

RTA claims that the Glydways system’s narrow, dedicated guideways can be constructed at ground level or elevated. The system is projected to offer a capacity exceeding 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions. Furthermore, RTA asserts that capital costs could be up to 90% lower and operating costs up to 70% lower compared to similar transport modes. However, the sources do not provide the basis for these comparative figures or performance results from the ongoing Bluewaters trial.

Potential Routes and Future Integration

Several potential routes are under consideration for future implementation. These include a 2.8 km connection between National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters, as well as routes serving Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay, and Mohammed Bin Rashid City. The proposed routes aim to strengthen the links between the Dubai Metro and various residential, commercial, and tourist areas within the city.

The announcement did not specify details regarding fares, public participation in the trial, or a timeline for wider commercial operations. RTA is pursuing this project through a public-private partnership model. Glydways, established in 2016, specializes in automated transit networks that utilize autonomous electric vehicles on dedicated guideways.

The RTA’s trial of the Glydways system represents a significant step in exploring advanced autonomous transit solutions for urban mobility in Dubai. The data collected during this four-week period will be crucial in determining the viability and potential expansion of such systems throughout the emirate, aiming to offer a new, efficient, and potentially cost-effective mode of public transportation.

The trial will examine the system’s ability to provide safe and reliable journeys and explore its integration with the public transport network. The vehicles are equipped with advanced sensors and AI for navigation and safety. This initiative is part of Dubai’s broader efforts to enhance its transportation infrastructure and adopt innovative technologies.
